One UN Rwanda remembers fallen colleagues

The One UN family in Rwanda and relatives of fallen UN staff commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.  During the ceremony UN staffs led prayers to comfort the families of 64 UN staff who were killed.

In his remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Lamin M. Manneh said: “The untimely passing away of our colleagues in such a tragic way is still a big shock to all of us. We, as UN staff in Rwanda, and worldwide will always remember their courage, their love and care, and their commitment and dedication to the work of the United Nations and to the welfare of all Rwandans”.

Aisha, the widow of Hassan Mazimpaka, a WFP driver who was killed during the Genocide, gave a moving testimony. She said that her husband was on mission in Huye for WFP when the Genocide occurred. She said that while she heard that her husband was hiding at Hotel Faucon, she never found out how he was killed. Attempts to retrieve the remains to give him a decent burial have been in vain until now. She added that she never found closure with regard to her husband death.  Sometimes when she is walking on the street or when she is on a bus, for few seconds she thinks she sees her husband only to realize that it is just a man that looks or has the same posture as Hassan. She also said that until today she catches herself, thinking that one day she will be sitting at home her husband is going to suddenly reappear.

Also speaking at the occasion, Senator Laurent Nkusi urged the people present to unite as a nation and fight against genocide ideology. The Senator also commended the government and the people of Rwanda for the effort in dealing with the consequences of the Genocide.

The ceremony was concluded by laying wreaths and roses in front of the memorial plaque.
